I am always surprised by learners’ responses to TOEFL Speaking Question 1, which asks you to share your opinion on familiar topics, such as whether making a quick decision is good or bad.
To my surprise, their responses often contain profound ideas and in-depth analyses, because they have practiced many times. However, their scores are often far below their expectations. Why?
Because they try to display what is not requested. The question asks about a familiar topic; it doesn’t ask you to act or think like a philosopher, scholar, or president. Just share your experience.
For example, you might talk about a quick decision you made recently, such as choosing which fast food chain was better or deciding not to bring an umbrella when it was about to rain. There are many examples like these in our daily lives.
That’s what you are asked to talk about. None of the questions ask you to share profound knowledge or insightful anecdotes.
Instead, you are asked to share a regret, such as choosing McDonald’s just because you saw it first, even though you could have chosen Taco BELL, or as some people say, TACO bell.
Remember, 45 seconds pass quickly. There is no need to be a philosopher.
